Under Gods is published by the Indiana University journal American Religion, in collaboration with the Center for the Understanding of Religion in American History at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. It was edited by project lead Peter Manseau; American Religion co-editors Cooper Harriss and Sarah Imhoff; and managing editors Andrew Ali Aghapour and Brook Wilensky-Lanford; with web design by Megan Goodwin and image research by Sabina Ali.
The site was created with support from the Henry Luce Foundation.
This project began as a series of conversations drawing on the expertise of dozens of historians, journalists, and artists. The editors are particularly grateful for the time and suggestions of Brandon Bayne of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill; specialist in Hawaiian religion, culture, and history Marie Alohalani Brown; co-creator of the Peabody Award-winning podcast When We All Get to Heaven Lynne Gerber; Luce Indigenous Knowledge Fellow Jaime Jacobs; Blackfeet historian and ethnobotanist Rosalyn LaPier; Rachel McBride Lindsey of Saint Louis University; Kathryn Lofton of Yale University; filmmaker Ashley Melzer; comedian Amy Allen; founder of The Food Section Hannah Raskin; folklorist Mariah Marsden; David Walker of the University of California-Santa Barbara; and Diane Winston of the University of the Southern California.
